The Char Dham Project is an ambitious infrastructure development initiative aimed at improving connectivity to the four sacred pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The project focuses on widening and upgrading existing roads, building new tunnels and bridges, and creating all-weather roads to ensure year-round access to these remote locations, especially for pilgrims. It also aims to enhance safety, reduce travel time, and promote tourism and economic growth in the region. The project has faced environmental concerns but strives to balance development with sustainability.
Route Details:
- Yamunotri: The route starts from Dehradun, traveling to Haridwar, and then to Rishikesh, before heading towards Yamunotri, via Kharadi and Jankichatti. The roads are being upgraded to make them more accessible.
- Gangotri: From Haridwar, the route goes through Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, and finally to Gangotri.
- Kedarnath: Accessible from Rishikesh, the route passes through Sonprayag and Gaurikund, with plans for better road access to Kedarnath via Helicopter services.
- Badrinath: From Haridwar, it follows the Rishikesh-Joshimath route, with an extension towards Badrinath, enhancing road conditions for smooth travel.
The project also focuses on improving connectivity to Rishikesh and Dehradun, which act as key starting points for the yatra.
